The February 13 date holds special significance for the city of Dresden. It was on that day, in 1943, that the city was bombed during World War II.
The City of Dresden’s website has hosted a message that is important for all people of good will. Please scroll below the photo to read the message.

Remembering for a future of coexistence in peace and democracy
On February 13, 2025, we commemorate the bombing of Dresden 80 years ago. We commemorate the immeasurable suffering that the National Socialist tyranny brought upon humanity.
Remembrance means taking responsibility for a future in peace, democracy and in recognition of the dignity of every human being. Today, 80 years after the end of the Second World War, only a few people can still tell us about their experiences at that time.
At the same time, democracies around the world are once again under threat and political dialog is in danger of falling silent in the face of populist disputes. People are suffering from war and terror, racism and anti-Semitism are on the rise. This makes it all the more important for future generations to keep this memory alive as a reminder and to stand up today for a “never again”.
February 13 reminds us to take a stand when our democracy is in danger, when people are discriminated against and intimidated, when verbal and physical violence has become acceptable. February 13 reminds us never to forget, so that together we can shape a future in peace and democracy.
In remembrance, we close the chain and thus form a protective community for coexistence in peace and democracy, for a coexistence that recognizes human rights and the dignity of each individual.
We call on you to take responsibility together in the various forms of remembrance around February 13 for a future of coexistence in mutual respect, peace and enlightened democracy.

Dresden’s Year of Remembrance 2025:
Future Through Remembrance

For the city of Dresden, 2025 will be a year of remembrance as the city reflects on three significant events from 80 years ago.
In January 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp was liberated by the Allied Forces. On February 13th and 14th, the city of Dresden was bombed and largely destroyed, with thousands of people killed or injured. Then on May 8th, the Second World War came to an end.
Throughout 2025, Dresden will remember the historic events of 1945 through readings and discussions, lectures, art activities, memorial events, concerts, exhibitions and opportunities for reflection.
Looking to the future while never forgetting the past, the city of Dresden stands for an open and tolerant society, democracy, respect, peace and humanity.
